SALT LAKE CITY — A series of recent crashes in Herriman, Farmington, and South Jordan are just part of several serious accidents reported this summer. As the use of e-bikes continues to rise, so do worries over safety and regulation.
“We’re seeing a huge spike in these accidents involving e-bikes, and it’s becoming really concerning,” said Sgt. Marcus Beckstead of the Herriman Police Department in August.
Officers have responded to multiple incidents in recent months, many tied to young riders or high-speed collisions in pedestrian areas.
At Magnum Electric Bikes in Trolley Square, sales are booming.
“E-bikes are extremely popular right now,” said Andy Van Patten, sales manager at the company.

Magnum sells models ranging from commuter bikes to off-road versions and stresses safety education during every purchase.
“It’s important to understand what is and isn’t legal,” Van Patten said. “When we see people riding too fast through crosswalks, we take the time to educate.”
Retailers support law enforcement
The company said it provides information on laws and safety gear but admits more must be done to prevent future accidents.
In Farmington, another crash last week led police to renew safety warnings. Sgt. Adam Hansen highlighted the need for riders to know e-bike classifications and where they can legally operate.
“When you buy an e-bike… please understand what you’re purchasing,” Hansen said. “Know the classification, where they can be used, where they cannot be used—and make sure you buy the protective gear that’s necessary.”
With summer wrapping up and students returning to school, officials and retailers are urging both riders and parents to take e-bike safety seriously. From helmet use to speed control and road rules, the message is the same: one accident or injury is one too many.
