MAGNA — Drivers using S-R 201 through Magna should prepare for major delays this weekend, as a five-mile stretch of the road will be completely closed for construction. Crews will be replacing large pipes connected to the Kennecott mine.
The closure begins at 2 a.m. Saturday and will remain in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday night. According to Utah Department of Transportation spokesperson John Gleason, the heaviest traffic impacts are expected on Sunday.
“There’s a lot of work happening across the state, and while some of it isn’t our project, it still impacts our roads,” Gleason said. “We want drivers to know what to expect and how to avoid getting stuck in delays.”

The work, led by Rio Tinto, involves replacing the massive water pipes that run above the freeway. Officials said the project requires a full road closure to be completed safely.
Gleason noted that crews aim to schedule projects during times of lighter traffic. The road is set to reopen by 10 p.m. Sunday, in time for Monday’s morning commute.
