Driver in critical condition after hitting street sweeper on I-15 in Washington County

Emergency personnel responded to a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 in Leeds on Wednesday morning that left one driver trapped and critically injured.

The crash was reported shortly before 8 a.m. on northbound I-15 near mile marker 22, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden told St. George News.

At the time of the crash, a Utah Department of Transportation street sweeper was clearing debris from a crash that occurred near the same mile marker on northbound I-15 several hours ear

The street sweeper was in the far-left lane when it was struck from behind by a Nissan passenger car, which spun it sideways to the right, where the Nissan was then struck by a silver Jeep, Roden said.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to St. George Regional Hospital in critical condition.

The street sweeper operator reported no injuries in the crash, while the driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries, Roden said.

The Nissan driver had to be extricated from the vehicle before being ground transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to information provided by Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue.

Roden said the entire northbound side of the interstate was closed to traffic as responders tended to the scene. The interstate was reportedly reopened for travel shortly before 11 a.m.

The Nissan was destroyed in the crash. The Jeep sustained heavy damage to its side and front, and the street sweeper sustained rear-end damage.

The Utah Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the crash, while Hurricane Fire and Rescue, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the UDOT’s Incident Management team responded to assist.
